Back at UFC 124 eight years ago, Jim Miller needed a minute and 59 seconds to submit Charles Oliveira via kneebar.
Saturday night at UFC on FOX 31, Oliveira returned the favor with a quick tapout of his own. Oliveira used a rear-naked choke to defeat the cagey veteran at 1:15 of the opening round in their lightweight main-card opener at Fiserv Forum.
With the victory, Oliveira now has 12 submissions in his UFC career, adding to his company record.
Miller, who was competing in his record 31st UFC fight, threw a low kick which Oliveira caught. He then picked Miller up for a slam and got Miller’s back after they hit the mat. The game Miller did his best to fend off the inevitable, but Oliveira persisted and sunk the choke in deep, leaving his opponent no choice but to tap.
With the victory, “Do Bronx” improved to 25-8 (1 NC). He’s won three straight, all via submission, and four of five. Miller (29-13, 1 NC) lost for the fifth time in his past six fights.
Despite his great success at 155 pounds, Oliveira continues to pine for featherweight, where he began his UFC career but missed weight on several occasions.
“Featherweight is my division,” Oliveira said through an interpreter. “Max Holloway you can come, I will get you.”
