UFC reportedly looking to strip Covington and book Tyron Woodley vs. Darren Till

Earlier today, Darren Till stirred the pot on social media by claiming that interim welterweight champion Colby Covington was ‘out’ of his anticipated title unification bout with Tyron Woodley.

Not many fans knew what to make of Till’s statement, but ESPN’s Ariel Helwani has reported that the UFC is, in fact, looking to strip Covington of the interim title and book Woodley vs. Till instead.

According to ESPN, Ultimate Fighting Championship was originally interested in booking Woodley vs. Covington as the headlining bout for UFC 228 on September 8, but ‘Chaos’ wanted the date pushed back.

30-year-old Covington won the interim strap last month at UFC 225 after cruising to a unanimous decision over former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos.

Till, who hails from Liverpool, England, took home a controversial unanimous decision win overStephen Thompson earlier this year at UFC Fight Night 130 and surged into the UFC’s official top-three welterweight rankings, surpassing the formerly top-ranked ‘Wonderboy’.

Reigning champ Tyron Woodley, who has defended his welterweight title twice since knocking outRobbie Lawler to win the belt in 2016, has been sidelined for most of 2018 due to injury. The 36-year-old tore his shoulder against Demian Maia and underwent successful surgery earlier this year.

It’s reported that Woodley’s team ‘could not be reached for comment’ over the latest developments in the welterweight title picture. UFC 228 is still without a main event.
