Don’t count Antonio Rogerio Nogueira out just yet.
The brother of the legendary Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira competed for the first time in nearly two years on Saturday night, and he made his return count.
Fighting in front of his Brazilian countrymen, the 42-year-old knocked out Sam Alvey at the 1:00 mark of the second round in a light heavyweight main card bout at UFC Sao Paulo.
“This is all for your guys,” Nogueira said. “I’m 42 years old, I’ve had health problems, but this is all for you guys.”
The opening round, quite frankly, lacked for action, as Alvey looked flat-footed and Nogueira just looked old.
But it turned out the veteran warrior knew what he was doing, and was simply picking his spots. Nogueira rocked Alvey with a big left hand in the early seconds of the second round and then went for the kill Nogueira Brothers style, landing several lefts and finally putting Alvey down for good with an overhand.
“I saw in his eyes,” Nogueira said. “I know when I get good time to make a good knockout.”
With his 14th career victory via finish, Nogueira improved to 23-8. He’s won two out of his past three. Alvey (33-11, 1 NC) had a two-fight win streak snapped.
