This Christmas Eve wasn’t very festive for UFC welterweight Alex Oliveira, as he was injured by a grenade in his home town of Tres Rios in Brazil.

First reported by Globo, Oliveira was caught up in the attack on Christmas Eve when he went out to a gas station in his local area to fill up his mother’s car with fuel. It was reported that Oliveira spotted some of his family members involved in an altercation, and when he went to intervene a grenade was then thrown in his direction.

“One guy came up and pointed a gun at my nephew’s face, and that’s when people started pushing each other,” Oliveira said (via MMA Fighting). “They had machetes, knives, a grenade. They threw a grenade in my direction. Shrapnel hit my leg and my foot.”

After the attack, “Cowboy” went to a local hospital in which he received treatment for his injuries, undergoing surgery on his leg to remove the grenade fragments.

Oliveira (19-6-1, 2NC) last fought at UFC 231 on December 8th against Gunnar Nelson, losing the fight by second-round submission.
