Five year UFC welterweight veteran Kenny Robertson has switched up his training camp for a scheduled UFC Fight Night: Poirier vs. Johnson collision with Roan Carneiro on September 17, 2016. Bloody Elbow’s Eddie Mercado spoke with Robertson about training with the former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes and spending some quality time down at Jackson/Wink MMA ahead of his main card match with Carneiro.
Interview: UFC Welterweight Kenny Robertson UFC FN 94
Kenny touched on his first training camp at Jackson/Wink MMA in Albuquerque, New Mexico:
“Haha boring. I mean it’s good it’s just train, take a nap, eat, sleep, train some more, repeat. I mean good guys down there, great coaches, great workout partners. It’s pretty down there too. I went for a couple drives and a couple hikes and stuff like that… It’s just to have good partners that want to go hard but not like injure you or anything. Everyone down there goes hard and you can look out for each other and help each other. It’s a good time.”
Robertson spoke on working with UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes, who also wrestled at Eastern Illinois University:
“Before I went down to Jackson’s, he was up kind of by my neighborhood so we rolled. We’ve rolled quite a few times. Sometimes I go down to Hillsboro; he’s been up here once or twice. It’s a little bit of a drive so I don’t do it all of the time but even for last fight I went down about four or five times. He’s still in crazy shape… He’s one of those freaks that could probably take a year off and still come back and grapple with anybody.”
Does Robertson think Hughes will be making a return to MMA competition?
“No, I think he’s done fighting for sure. I think he might maybe do some grappling tournaments some day if he wanted to. As far as fighting, I think he’s probably done.”
