If you were expecting a reduction in UFC events under the new owners, that won’t be the case for 2017.
On Saturday, February 11th, the UFC’s first pay-per-view of 2017 will take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. UFC 208 was originally slated for January 21st, but a lack of a suitable main event led to its postponement. The UFC also postponed a “Fight Night” event slated to run the night before UFC 209: Woodley vs. Thompson 2 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
While earlier rumors that the UFC’s new owners would be looking into reducing the number of live events held annually, 2017’s schedule appears to be in line with the previous two years. MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani has the details on what you can expect as far as the UFC’s planned schedule.
- 13 pay-per-views (11 in United States, 1 in Canada, 1 in Brazil).
- Four “big” Fox shows.
- 16 FS1 “Fight Night” events.
- Two TUF Finales.
- Six Fight Pass cards.
- Events by region: United States (23), Canada (3), Latin America (2), Brazil (3), Asia (3), Australia (2), Europe/Middle East/Africa (5).
- 41 Total events.
So nothing has changed as far as total events, as 41 is the same number the UFC ran in 2015 and 2016. With 13 pay-per-views still on tap, that means that there will be at least one month with multiple PPVs on the calendar.
Locations, dates, and venues are all still far from finalized, but here are some other news and notes from Helwani:
- UFC on FOX 24 is currently scheduled to take place at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, MO on April 15, which would mark the promotion’s debut in Kansas City. That was first reported by CagePages.com.
- UFC 212 is currently scheduled to take place June 3 in Brazil.
- UFC is once again planning on holding three-straight events during International Fight Week in Las Vegas: July 6 on Fight Pass, July 7 on FS1 (TUF Finale) and July 8 would be UFC 213 on pay-per-view.
- The promotion is currently targeting Canada for UFC 216 on Sept. 9.
- The year-end show, UFC 220, is currently scheduled for Dec. 30 in Las Vegas.
Perhaps this news isn’t completely surprising, as the UFC’s TV deal with FOX doesn’t expire until 2018, so those obligations still need to be fulfilled. That also means we probably won’t see a major reduction of fighters on the UFC roster. In the meantime, I hope your Saturdays are freed up, because there are a lot of fight weeks coming our way.
