UFC light heavyweight title contender Volkan Oezdemir’s arrest Saturday stemmed from a bar fight that took place on Aug. 12, according to details from his bond hearing on Sunday.

According to a report in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the 28-year-old Oezdemir was in a fight with a man named Kevin Cohen. Cohen sustained swelling and received cuts on his head from the fight, it was said at the hearing.

The alleged incident took place at an unnamed Fort Lauderdale bar. Oezdemir’s attorney, Bruce A. Zimet, described the incident as a bar room altercation and said Oezdemir was not the aggressor and was totally justified in his actions.

The report stated that it was unclear what prompted the fight.

Oezdemir was arrested by Fort Lauderdale police and charged with aggravated battery causing serious bodily injury — a second-degree felony. His bond was set at $10,000 according to records from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

Originally from Switzerland, Oezdemir trains in South Florida with Combat Club in Lantana, Fla., in Palm Beach County. Per court records, his passport has been seized. Oezdemir formerly trained in South Florida with the Blackzilians before that team disbanded.

Oezdemir (15-1) was linked to a championship fight with Daniel Cormier (19-1, 1 NC). No date has been announced for the fight but it was expected to take place in early 2018. Oezdemir, who debuted this year, has won all three of his UFC fights, the last two by first-round knockout in under one minute.

The UFC has yet to comment on the arrest other than saying the promotion is aware of it and investigating it.
