The next installment of Golden Boy on DAZN will take place on April 25th in Indio, California, headlined by one of Canada’s rising stars attempting to avenge his lone career defeat. The main event pits Yves Ulysse Jr. against Steve Claggett, while Oscar Negrete looks to make it 2-0 against Joshua Franco in the co-feature.
Ulysse Jr. (17-1, 9 KO) lost a questionable decision to Claggett (27-5-2, 17 KO) in 2017, but earned a breakout win over Cletus Seldin in his HBO debut two months later and went on to win his next two. Claggett, meanwhile, is 1-1-1 since that bout, most recently drawing with unbeaten Mathieu Germain in January.
According to the press release, this will be for the WBA “gold” belt at super lightweight. I have no idea what that means; it presumably confers some sort of mandatory-ish status against champion Kiryl Relikh, but it’s anyone’s guess how that will pan out.
Colombia’s Negrete (18-1-1, 7 KO) had little to offer Ray Vargas in his first title shot back in 2017, but had an absolute war with Franco (14-1-1, 7 KO) last October, with both men averaging nearly 100 punches thrown per round. It ultimately ended in a split draw, which you can watch in its entirety here.
