UFC middleweight Adam Hunter has been handed a two-year ban by USADA after he tested positive for banned substances. Lots of them.
Two months ago, newly signed UFC middleweight Adam “Warhammer” Hunter was scheduled to make his debut against Ryan Janes. Just one day before the fight (and after he’d already weighed in), Hunter was pulled from the card due to a potential anti-doping violation stemming from an out-of-competition USADA drug test.
We now have an update on the Canadian fighter’s status, and USADA has indeed handed down a two-year ban. The official USADA press release has the details, and you’re probably wondering what Hunter didn’t fail for.
“Hunter, 32, tested positive for tamoxifen metabolite, boldenone metabolites, methandienone metabolites, drostanolone metabolite, and clenbuterol following an out-of-competition urine test ordered by USADA and conducted by one of its partner national anti-doping organizations, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, on August 11, 2016. These non-specified substances are prohibited at all times under the BCAC Anti-Doping Policy and the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, both of which have adopted the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List. On the WADA Prohibited List, tamoxifen is a substance in the class of Hormone and Metabolic Modulators, while boldenone, methandienone, drostanolone, and clenbuterol are substances in the class of Anabolic Agents.”
If you’re keeping score, that’s a whopping 5 banned substances found in that out-of-competition sample. It might be worth phoning up Guinness to see if that’s a world record.
Hunter’s ban is retroactive to August 26th, 2016, which means he’ll be eligible to return to competition two years from that date. It’s also worth noting that the BC Athletic Commission (BCAC) and USADA jointly announced the two-year ban, so as MMA Fighting’s Marc Raimondi notes, Hunter “won’t be able to fight at all under an Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports jurisdiction in the U.S. and Canada.”
UPDATE: Adam Hunter’s management team released this short statement to Bloody Elbow.
“We respect and accept the decision made by USADA. We look forward to Adam competing again soon after the suspension is up.”
