In a match-up between two undefeated super featherweights, San Jose, California’s Andy Vences (17-0, 10 KOs) scored a nine round technical decision over Casey Ramos (23-1, 6 KOs) of Austin, Texas, on Friday night at the Treasure Island Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
Fighting cautiously in the opening round round, Vences landed a counter right uppercut on Ramos. In round two Ramos pressed the fight as the taller Vences popped the jab. Ramos continued to go forward in round three as Vences countered. Vences circled the ring in round four as Ramos stalked letting his hands go. Ramos overwhelmed Vences in round five as he outworked him on the inside responding with punches.
Halfway through in round six Vences timed Ramos as he landed a solid straight right, catching Ramos on his way inside. Vences was in a groove in round seven as he kept Ramos at a distance as Ramos began to trickle blood from his nose. Ramos was cut on the left eye from a head butt in round eight that affected his vision as Vences took advantage landing punches Ramos didn’t see coming. Trading away in round nine referee Vic Drackulich momentarily stopped the fight. The doctor took a look at Ramos and waved the bout at 1:12. The judges scored it 88-83, 87-84, and 86-85 for Vences, who wins the vacant WBC Continental Americas title.
