Ariel Sexton needed to pull out every trick in the book to put Kota Shimoishi away.
The two lightweights battled back and forth at ONE Championship’s Pursuit of Power event Friday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, before Sexton managed to assert himself on the mat. Stepping over his opponent during a scramble, “Tarzan” transitioned into a reverse triangle before using punches to the body to soften Shimoishi up and then adding on an americana to pick up a hard-earned submission win in round three:
Sexton (12-4), a native of Costa Rica who fights out of Vancouver, British Columbia, won for the fourth time in six appearances for ONE. He gets back on the winning track after dropping a split decision nod to Ev Ting in February.
Osaka, Japan’s Shimoishi falls to 21-6 as professional after losing his ONE debut.
