By Allan Fox: Moises “Chucky” Flores (25-0, 11 KOs) will get another title shot against WBA Super World super bantamweight champion Guillermo “The Jackal” Rigondeaux (17-0, 11 KOs) due to their previous fight on June 17 being ruled a no contest.
On Monday, the World Boxing Association ordered the rematch between the two fighters. The management for Rigondeaux and Flores has 30 days to negotiate the rematch. If they don’t come to an agreement by the end of the 30-day period, then the WBA will order a purse bid.
Last months’ fight between Rigondeaux and Flores ended after Rigondeaux knocked Flores out with a shot after the bell. Some boxing fans think Flores faked the knockout in an attempt to try and win the fight by a disqualification. Flores went down in a delayed reaction after getting hit by Rigondeaux. That’s what made some fans feel that Flores was just hoping to get an easy way.
Initially, the referee Vic Drakulich scored it as a legal blow that Rigondeaux landed. Later on the Nevada State Athletic Commission reviewed the fight and they reversed the ruling on June 26, changing it to a no contest.
Flores, 30, was too slow for Rigondeaux during their fight. It was embarrassingly one-sided. Flores was making a lot of noise when he was throwing his shots, but he missing badly. In between Flores’ missed shots, Rigondeaux was nailing him with stinging shots to the head. It didn’t look like Flores belonged in the same ring with Rigondeaux, as he was getting worked over. In the finals of the round, Flores tried to open up with some hard shots.
Rigondeaux responded by grabbing the back of Flores’ head and then hitting him rapidly with several hard uppercuts to the head. The referee Vic Drakulich then came forward to stop Rigondeaux from holding and hitting. However, just when Drakulich moved to get in between the two fighters, Rigondeaux landed a scorching left hand to the head of Flores that sent him down in a delayed reaction. The bell had sounded moments earlier just before the punch landed.
A rematch between Rigondeaux and Flores will likely be just as one-sided as the first fight. Rigondeaux will obviously be looking to be careful this time that he doesn’t hit Flores after the bell. It’s still likely end by another knockout because Flores is just too easy to hit and way too slow for Rigondeaux, Flores will get a payday out of the fight, but that’s about it.
If Flores doesn’t hit Rigondeaux with a big shot to knock him out then he’s going to get knocked out himself at some point. Hopefully, Flores doesn’t drop to the canvas if he gets hit by another foul. It would be bad if Rigondeaux gets disqualified or if it’s ruled another no contest. At some point the WBA will need to let the wo fighters move on and go in another direction, because it’ll become a job if another fight between the two of them ends in similar manner.
Flores will need to wait 60 days minimum for his title shot due to him having been knocked out. I don’t think it matters how long Flores waits. He’s going to be out of his class when he does get inside the ring with Rigondeaux.
