Although negotiations for mandatory title defense between Gennady Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs has been ongoing, one hold up was due to a formal request by Daniel Jacobs for a 60-40 purse split in Golovkin’s favor should the fight go to purse bid (as opposed to the customary 75-25 split for the champion).

Unfortunately for Jacobs the WBA has denied his request in a unanimous vote, according to RingTV. Jacobs had hoped that his “regular” titleholder status might earn him a bigger piece of the pie. It won’t – at least not through these means.

The WBA has still yet to order a purse bid for the fight but has given a little more time for both sides to come to an agreement, with the open negotiation period now available through October 22nd. Golovkin’ promoter Tom Loeffler suggests that he’s still committed to working out a deal with Jacobs before a purse bid becomes necessary.

“I think the WBA recognized that Gennady has made 16 title defenses,” Loeffler told RingTV.com on Wednesday. “He’s been the WBA champion for over six years, so we’re just happy they upheld their rules and hopefully it allows us to continue to move closer to make the fight with Jacobs. I think it’s always more beneficial for a promotion to try and work out a deal so both sides are satisfied.”

If the fight ultimately goes to purse bid things could potentially get more complicated. If Al Haymon, who manages Jacobs, were to win the rights to the fight, he’d probably want to hold it on Showtime where he has something of a strategic alliance. But with Golovkin fighting under an exclusive contract with HBO, that could prove to be a nonstarter. The good news is that Jacob’s side is reportedly willing to fight on HBO under the right arrangements — which almost assuredly means for the right price.
