WBC BOXING GAINS STRENGTH IN IRAN

The World Boxing Council is now a significant, vibrant and growing presence in Iran, with the avowed aim of explaining, evolving and developing the concept of professional boxing into practical reality.

At the hub of this exacting, challenging, exciting and worthwhile enterprise, which started in 2010, is Reza Djabbarpoor, who’s the Founder and President of Iran Boxing Council.

Reza explains the first goal was the foundation of professional boxing in Iran, explaining its role and convincing that it’s safe, admirable and viable. Part of that involved a major boxing tournament in 2011, in which some former amateurs took the plunge into the professional ranks. That same year, another important first. A national WBC Convention for professional boxing in Iran. And another one this year.

Since then there have been more activities in Iran, including seminars for ring officials, and technical seminars to help boxers to better understand the world of professional boxing.

Reza praises the WBC for its steadfast support. He says: “Dr Jose Sulaiman was great, and his Son Mauricio is fantastic. He is supporting us in this matter and we are a member of the Asian Boxing Council.

“We will now have a new series of fight nights and we are planning a championship for the beginning of next year. We are working hard and with great enthusiasm.

“Everyone in Iran knows the WBC, and I’m looking to the future. Next month there will be an international ring officials seminar. And an important next step is forwarding the names of Iranian professional boxers to the Asian Boxing Council’s Ratings Committee.”

Introducing new concepts is seldom plain sailing, but Rezza, who’s already mapped hitherto uncharted territory, remains, intrepid, optimistic, innovative and steadfastly determined to develop Iranian professional boxing into greatness. He says:

“It was not so easy. It’s still not so easy, but we don’t give up, because we love boxing and everything we do with love for it. And this will work.”
