WBC designates 2021 the Year of Boxing

As part of a fightback against the pandemic and to celebrate so many poignant anniversaries, the WBC is designating 2021 The Year of Boxing.

Yes, …it`ll be half a century since The Fight of the Century first encounter in Madison Square Garden between up to that point unbeaten Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.

A committee has been formed to coordinate the activities and the celebration will culminate in New York on March 8th, including a screening of the fight at…where else?  Opus 100 is helping launch this and the 100 best championship fights in history in a bumper book.

Other fantastic and important anniversaries come to pass in 2021. The one-hundredth anniversary of the birth of Sugar Ray Robinson, a century since the first million dollars gate in the fight between Jack Dempsey and Georges Carpentier. A quarter of a century since the fight between Carlos Zarate and Rodolfo Martinez, forty years since Alexis Arguello won his fourth weight division, also forty years since Salvador Sanchez defeated Wilfredo Gomez, stopping him in the eighth round. Thirty-five years since Mike Tyson, who was then just twenty KO`d Trevor Berbick to become the youngest heavyweight champion in history.

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman says: “We are dedicating next year to celebrate Boxing. It will be the Year of Boxing.”
