WBC suspends Luis Nery “indefinitely”

Can’t tainted-beef his way out of this one.

The WBC has indefinitely suspended “bantamweight” Luis Nery for his grievous failure to make weight before his victory over Shinsuke Yamanaka yesterday. Nery is no longer eligible to compete for a WBC title or appear in its rankings.

Nery is, of course, free to box for any of the other sanctioning bodies, whose titles are currently held by Ryan Burnett, Jamie McDonnell, and Zolani Tete. There’s only so much one alphabet group can do.

“Pantera” (26-0, 20 KO) avoided repercussions from a failed drug test in his first fight with Yamanaka by claiming he’d consumed tainted meat, which has become a go-to excuse. For reference, the current defense of choice for MMA fighters who piss hot is “tainted supplements.”

Despite being just 23, Nery has already amassed a career’s worth of antipathy. The redemption tour is going to be something to behold.
