Wilder vs Breazeale to be announced next week

Deontay Wilder is set to defend his WBC heavyweight title this spring against mandatory challenger Dominic Breazeale. How we get to this point has been gone over enough, but in case you’re hopping in now, here are the bullet points:

  • Wilder was ordered to rematch Tyson Fury after their Dec. 1 draw, but Fury instead signed with ESPN and Top Rank and scrapped those plans
  • As a result of that, the WBC’s other ordered big heavyweight fight between Breazeale and Dillian Whyte for an interim title was also abandoned, and the organization ordered Wilder-Breazeale instead, as Breazeale was already the mandatory challenger

Anyway, Wilder-Breazeale is happening. BombZquad Promotions put out a press release on Tuesday announcing that the fight will be made official next Tuesday, March 19, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where the fight had been expected to be held on May 18.

But that date isn’t set in stone, and the real question — and it appears nobody is tipping their hand here — is where it will air. There was previous talk of a Showtime pay-per-view, but that was before DAZN entered the game, and reportedly made Wilder a two-fight, $50 million offer.

So we’re less than a week from finding out Deontay Wilder’s immediate future, maybe less if someone leaks something.
