William Abraham made Yucatan Boxing…GREAT!

Born in 1931 in Halachó, Yucatán, passed away in 2005 in Merida, Don Wílliam, Father of Mario Abraham Xacur, The President of Max Boxing, is the greatest promoter of Yucatan and one of the very best in Mexico.

He loved boxing as much as his companies, which both grew amazingly in Yucatan, counting with the support of his brothers, especially, Assisi.

Don William took five  Yucatecan boxers to world titles, creating a brilliant and unique golden age of boxing in Yucatan.

In the great card held last Saturday at Polifórum Zamná where the adopted son of Mérida, Miguel ¨Alacrán¨ Berchelt, made the third succesful defense of his super featherweight world title, knocking out Argentine challenger Jonathan Barros, the memory of Don William Abraham is forever remembered and cherished by the Yucatecan fans.

In the 70s Don William Abraham guided Gustavo Espadas Cruz better known as “Guty Espadas,” With Espadas a triumphant world flyweight championship (1976-1978).

The San Francisco de Asis Gymnasium became famous and other wonderful prospects arrived who later became world champions. They were: Freddy “Chato” Castillo (flyweight WBC 1978 and fly WBC 1982), Juan Herrera (WBA flyweight -1982), Guadalupe “Lupe” Madera (lt. flyweight WBA 1983-1984) and “Guty” Espadas Espinosa (2000-2001).

With the Espadas Family , Guty dad and Guty son, he achieved something amazing  on April 14, 2000, Espadas Jr.  won the WBC featherweight world championship by defeating Filipino Luisito Espinosa to become the first son and father world champions from  the region.

Legendary stories of Don Wílliam, a dear friend of Don José Sulaimán Chagnón, who was President of the World Boxing Council.

Unfortunately Don William died on May 1, 2005, but his memory remains forever bright and distinct in Yucatan, and throughout the world of boxing.
