In a scrappy fight where neither fighter seemed to want to take significant risks, Zolani Tete outpointed Mikhail Aloyan to retain the WBO bantamweight title and move on to the World Boxing Super Series tournament semifinals.
Scores were 114-110, 114-111, and 114-111, all for Tete, who improved to 28-2 (21 KO). Aloyan is now 4-1 (0 KO).
It was a fight that never really meshed, a pair of technically sound fighters who wanted to wait on mistakes from their opponent, and mistakes just weren’t there too often for anyone to capitalize and create excitement.
Tete now moves on to face the winner of the Ryan Burnett-Nonito Donaire fight, which takes place on November 3 in Glasgow.
In the co-feature, Andrew Tabiti stayed undefeated and moved on to the WBSS cruiserweight tournament semifinals with a decision win over home fighter Ruslan Fayfer. Tabiti (17-0, 13 KO) won on scores of 114-113, 115-112, and 116-111. Fayfer falls to 23-1 (16 KO).
