Marlon Moraes ended his World Series of Fighting contract with a sensational knockout of Josh Hill in Saturday night’s main event in Everett, Washington.
World Series of Fighting aired directly opposite UFC 201 last night, but it’s worth catching a replay of the event if only to see Marlon Moraes putting on another terrific show. The Brazilian bantamweight defended his title against Josh Hill for the 2nd time in just over a year. He went the distance with Hill (49-46 x3) the first time, but in Everett, Washington he put a hurtin’ on Hill.
Check out the head kick finish at the top of the page. Moraes is now a free agent, and I’m sure most fans want to see him in the UFC as soon as possible. It’s long overdue at this point.
Meanwhile, Lance Palmer took back the featherweight title against the man who took it from him, Alexandre de Almeida. This seemed like a pretty clear Palmer victory, but one judge interestingly enough used the 10-10 card and scored it a 48-48 draw. Almeida probably deserved to lose anyway just for this failed walkoff KO attempt.
Adopted brothers Caros Fodor and Ben Fodor (Phoenix Jones) fought each other in the heavily promoted feature main card fight. Caros won a 30-26 (x3) unanimous decision in a fight that genuinely didn’t need to happen. Shockingly, Caros is much better at MMA than Ben.
For what it’s worth, this pre-fight interview with Phoenix told me everything I needed to know about needing to watch this fight.
Lastly, highly touted prospect Phil Hawes was choked out by Louis Taylor with a guillotine just about midway through the 2nd round. It was a sweet submission followed by a … erm … well, Taylor used his finger guns to fire off two shots at Hawes.
