The thrilling and unremitting slugfest draw between Orlando “Siri” Salido and WBC super featherweight champion Francisco “Bandido” Vargas was a head and shoulders above a fistful of other humdingers, winning WBC 2016 “Fight of the Year.”
So it was somewhat apt that the trophy that WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman presented Him was a head and torso bust! It was his half of the award.
Accompanied by his Manager Sean Gibbons, Orlando Salido came to the traditional “Tuesday of coffee” not only to give thanks for the opportunity to fight for the title of the organization that he considers the most important, but also to ask for a much anticipated rematch.
“I’m extremely grateful for all that this sport has given me, I have always lived and breathed boxing.
“The fight with Francisco was very hard, but I am satisfied with the work that I did as we both take the recognition of the public and of all those who love and enjoy boxing.
This year I am sure that I will become WBC World Champion ”
Sean said that from the very moment this classic fight ended he’s been working day and night to try and gain a rematch for Orlando, with Francisco, which he feels he’s both deserved and earned. Sean said Orlando has amazing grit, overcoming and learning from thirteen career losses, to mature into a superb fighter. And that characteristically Orlando will take it to the next level in a rematch with Bandiido…to win! That’s how knuckle headed he is!
Sean also explained that the first fight was so emotional, directly following on from the death of Muhammad Ali! He and Orlando presented President Mauricio Sulaiman, with the boxing gloves worn that night, plus a distinctive red shirt worn by Orlando, depicting The Greatest, created by accomplished artist OG Abel.
