Yuriorkis Gamboa showdown considered for former three weight world champion Ricky Burns, John Dennen reports
SCOTLAND’S Ricky Burns could travel to America to fight Yuriorkis Gamboa later this year.
Burns, a former three world champion, moved back to lightweight after a loss to Julio Indongo and suffered a second consecutive defeat to Anthony Crolla. However he is back in action this weekend in Newcastle and expected to collect a win over Ivan Njegac at the Metro Radio Arena. After that he will look to more high profile contests.
Cuba’s Gamboa, a dazzling fighter in his prime, suffered a shock defeat against Robinson Castellanos last year but came back with two victories, notably a good win over Jason Sosa last time out. Gamboa vs Burns could take place in New York in September on the first bill broadcast on DAZN, Boxing News understands.
The Scotsman has other choices to consider, especially if the possibility of entering a super-lightweight World Boxing Super Series tournament becomes an option.
But first he must win on Saturday in Newcastle.
“I’ve got no regrets in my career, I’ve lived it. I’m proud to say I’m a three weight world champion and still think there’s a couple of big fights in me,” he declared. “That being said, I have a job to do on Saturday night for those to come to fruition. I’ve never boxed in Newcastle before so am looking forward to the atmosphere. Lewis Ritson [who headlines] is doing wonderfully well, I’ve enjoyed watching his recent rise. We had him in for sparring a while ago and I remember telling Eddie [Hearn] he should sign him.
“If I had to pick one fight to have next it would be the Crolla rematch. I’ve watched it back a couple of times and think it was a draw in all honesty. Whether it can be made or not is another matter.”
