Yuriorkis Gamboa and Juan Manuel Lopez should have met years ago, when both were unbeaten, hot fighters promoted by Top Rank, but promoter Bob Arum infamously wanted it to further “marinate,” and the fight never happened.
But it’s coming in 2019, after the two faded stars won on Saturday night in Miami.
In the main event, Gamboa (29-2, 17 KO) defeated Mexico’s Miguel Beltran (33-7, 22 KO), scoring a first round knockdown before cruising to a decision on scores of 98-91, 99-90, and 100-89.
Lopez (36-6, 32 KO) won his fight over Cristian Mino (19-3, 17 KO) on scores of 96-89, 96-89, and 97-88, dropping the Argentine fighter four times along the way.
Gamboa-Lopez absolutely, definitely, 1000% isn’t the fight it should have been way back when, but they’re both exciting fighters and are probably about equally washed, and sometimes that can still make for a plenty entertaining bout. Whenever it happens, hopefully at least we get that much.
