With Joao Zeferino out with an injury, World Series of Fighting lightweight champion Justin Gaethje will defend his title against Luiz Firmino.
A few days ago, WSOF lightweight champion Justin Gaethje was in Toronto, Ontario for UFC 206, and announced that he was in need of a new opponent after Joao Zeferino withdrew. He specifically called out Jason High, and it was all on video (via Ariel Helwani).
Gaethje does have a new opponent, but it won’t be High. World Series of Fighting announced on Tuesday that Gaethje will be taking on Luiz Firmino, in the promotion’s debut event in New York City. Firmino (19-7) is coming off a 1st round arm-triangle choke loss to Brian Foster, which brought an end to his six-fight winning streak. Gaethje (16-0) last fought in March, stopping Brian Foster with leg kicks in less than 2 minutes. He was scheduled to defend his title against Ozzy Dugulubgov in October, but Ozzy withdrew on fight day due to illness. Gaethje has been WSOF’s lightweight champion since stopping Rich Patishnock in January 2014.
