Japanese beauty and brawn, Erica Hanawa, laid claim to the World Boxing Council-Asian Boxing Council female atomweight but not without a strong resistance from Filipina Christine Latube.
Hanawa survived the hard-hitting Latube in six rounds to score a unanimous decision win before a cheering capacity crowd at the Mandaluyong Elementary School that was adorned by Philippine flag-inspired posters in celebration of the 118 years of Philippine independence over the weekend.
Using her hand-speed and in-and-out footwork, Hanawa offset Latube’s heavy hands and plodding offense to stay out of trouble and remain unbeaten in five fights.
Latube’s inferior record of 1W-9L-2D going into fight proved to be a non-factor as she gave Hanawa a tough fight and put the Japanese in trouble a couple of times.
