PANABO CITY (Sept. 15) – Former champion Glenn “The Rock” Porras and new sensation Michael “Chieftain” Bravo stopped their separate opponents to emerge as the new champions in their respective divisions in the Mindanao Professional Boxing Association (MinPROBA) on Friday at the Antonio R. Floirendo Gym here.
Porras landed powerful body shots to pummel to submission former MinPROBA light flyweight champion Dingdong “The Fantasy Warrior” Quinones during the rest period of the second round to capture the vacant MinPROBA super bantamweight title in the main event of “The Redemption: Clash of Champions”.
Porras, a former interim WBO Asia Pacific Youth bantamweight champion improved his record to 30 wins with 18 knockouts against six losses and no draw while Quinones, an ex-MinPROBA light flyweight champion dropped to 6-19-1, 4 KOs.
“Lipay kaayo ko na nag champion na pud ko (I’m so very happy that I’m a champion again),” said Porras, also former MinPROBA and Philippine Boxing Federation bantamweight title-holder.
Bravo, on the other hand, waited for the right timing in stopping upset conscious Armando Yee of Gen. Santos City in 1:48 of the second round.
Bravo started slow in the opening round unlike Yee, who was able to land his jabs twice on the Manobo native from North Cotabato.
Bravo, however, came back strong in the second canto as he connected his stinging jabs and solid body shots.
Bravo now has 12 wins with five knockouts against only one loss while Yee suffered his 11th defeat against only two losses and four draws.
“Nagasalamat ko ug dako sa akong mga promoter, manager, trainer ug coach” (I thanked my promoter, manager, trainer and coach), said Bravo.
Meanwhile, reigning Philippine Boxing Federation lightweight champion Rosekie “Kapre” Cristobal also of MB Northstar Promotions continued his winning ways by scoring a unanimous decision over the hard-fighting Jovany Rota of Bukidnon.
Judges Brembot Dulalas saw it 76-75 while judges Romy Fordaliza (77-74) and Lito delos Reyes (77-75) also gave their nods to Cristobal after eight rounds of the exciting bout.
“Rosekie, however needs to only fight now in the 135 lbs. so that he can score a knockout,” said promoter-manager Jilson Basang of MB Northstar Promotions.
“The 140 lbs. division is too much for Rosekie,” added Basang.
Games and Amusements Board (GAB) Commissioner Mar Masanguid awarded the golden belts to the new champions together with MinPROBA supervisor Lito delos Reyes.
They were assisted by promoter Engr. Basang and matchmaker Engr. Ricard “Bong” Javier.
The exciting boxing card was presented by MB Northstar Promotions in coordination with the city government under Mayor James Gamao.
The boxing event billed as “The Redemption: Clash of Champions” was presented by the MB Northstar Promotions. It was supported by the Rep. Tonyboy Floirendo, Mayor James Gamao, Panabo City Government, JBRJ Construction, PS Solutions of Ralph Peterson and Nature’s Spring Water.
