“LULU” WINS A “BONITA” SLUGFEST

By WBCboxing.com

Lourdes “La Pequena Lulu” Juarez retained her WBC FECOMBOX female flyweight title via a split decision, over Diana “La Bonita” Fernandez following a fight of two distinct halves.

Fighting in front of a home crowed in Juarez, Diana who’s cherubic looks and sweet nature out of ring hours, bely a fierce competitive, highly aggressive style within in, threw everything she had in an outright onslaught against Lulu, who had to withstand a firestorm in the first five rounds.

Giving away height, and almost seven years in age, but holding an edge in experience, Lulu remained calm and collected under this welter and surge of fire, and as the storm blew itself out, she gained the initiative via smart boxing, backed up with an accurate left jab.

Things were still rough with a lot of give and take. Diana got pushed through the ropes, almost landing on the ringside tables in the sixth.   Referee Rocky Burke docked Diana a point in the next round for holding and hitting. She switched to southpaw several times, but Lulu was now getting the better of the exchanges, throwing some effective right uppercuts. Both went at it hammer and tongs in the tenth and final round, to finish a very fierce and highly entertaining encounter.

They sportingly embraced after the final bell and Lulu’s big sister Mariana joined in. A rematch would be most welcome, somewhere down the line.
