LOS ANGELES, CA –   Abner Mares, former three division World Boxing Champion, was honored on Tuesday by The Shadow League at their third annual Leadership award dinner at the L’Ermitage in Beverly Hills, CA on July 12. Mares  was honored for his continuing community work within the greater Los Angeles area including his back to school drives, food give-aways and student scholarships.

Abner joined 2016 Olympic Track & Field team member Brittney Reese, Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe and Nike Basketball executive George Raveling as the honorees at the dinner.

The Shadow League Award for Leadership honors men and women of color who have established themselves as leaders in the world of sports, whose presence and impact extend beyond their everyday job–in athlete and executive categories.

Past honorees include David Rone, former president, Time Warner Cable Networks & Time Warner Cable Sports (2014); Christine Simmons, Los Angeles Sparks president and COO (2015); and Boxing Champion Terence Crawford (2015). The Shadow League Awards are presented by AT&T and DIRECTTV

Speaking on his commitment to giving back to his community Mares said, “When I came to the United States at the age of seven from Mexico I came like so many before me have. New, not knowing what was ahead but with a dream of making it and creating a better life. It wasn’t easy, but with the love of my family I have been able to create a career that has allowed me to take care of my family and give back to the community that welcomed me when I first arrived in Los Angeles. Giving back is something I want to do and am honored to do. I am touched to receive this Leadership award and be in the company of so many inspirational leaders. Thank you to the Shadow League for this.”
