World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman is hoping that AIBA, will sort out its legion of problems, to avoid Amateur Boxing losing its participant status in the Olympic Games.
At the WBC Convention in Kiev, Mauricio stated that amateur boxing is the basis for the sport. It’s been part of the Olympics since 1904, and it being dropped would have major consequences in many countries.
The WBC Amateur Boxing Program is successful and a platform for safe competition. There have been more than 180 amateur tournaments in Mexico, during the last year.
It’s AIBA, which has the problems with the International Olympic Committee and needs to present a detailed report to the IOC by November. Mauricio says that losing amateur boxing in the 2020 Olympic Games would be a tremendous blow.
Putting a brave face on it he said: “I’m hopeful AIBA will sort out their problems.”
