Amir Khan backs Kell Brook’s decision to face Gennady Golovkin

If anyone in recent memory can relate to the position Kell Brook is currently in, it’s Amir Khan. The cosmic bond between the two domestic rivals appears to have been completely solidified through either some strange fate conjured up in the Twilight Zone, or perhaps just some simpler form of divine intervention.

After all, it was only a couple of months ago that Khan himself entered the ring facing a much larger foe in Canelo Alvarez. Upon announcement Canelo-Khan was universally derided as a mismatch, and despite Khan putting up his best effort for six rounds, that proved itself true after Canelo left Khan laying motionless on the mat for several minutes — something I like to call “the predictability of inevitability.”

But now it’s Kell Brook’s chance to try to make the statement that Amir Khan couldn’t, and he’ll surely be up against it facing a top-rated pound-for-pound destroyer in Golovkin. But being kindred spirits and all, Amir Khan can’t help but to tip his cap to Brook for daring to do what many other legitimate middleweights wouldn’t.

Despite the slight goad at the end, Khan finished by saying that British fighters are running boxing right now, with so many willing to take on the biggest challenges. Of course there are a few British fighters I can think of that weren’t exactly eager jump into the crucible with Golovkin, but by all accounts Brook didn’t even hesitate.

So despite Canelo-Khan and GGG-Brook coming together under very different circumstances, there are just enough similarities between them to give boxing fans and media alike that déjà vu feeling. Now the only question is will Brook be able to succeed where Khan fell short?
