Andre Berto NOT interested in Devon Alexander rematch

Boxingnews24.com

By Jim Dower: Andre Berto (32-5, 24 KOs) has ruled out a rematch with former 140 & 147 pound world champion Devon Alexander (27-5-1, 14 KOs). Berto, 34, defeated Alexander by a 12 round spli decision last Saturday night on Premier Boxing Champions on Fox & Fox Deportes from the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.

While the fight was certainly close, there was a clear winner in Berto. The judges had it 115-112, 115-112 for Berto, and 114-113. Alexander knocked Berto down in round 3. But after that knockdown, Alexander faded badly and let Berto take control of the fight and cruise to victory.

“I don’t see any point in a rematch,” Berto said about a rematch with Alexander.“We’re at a point in our careers where it doesn’t make any sense to have a rematch. I’m about that cash. That’s something you’ve got to Amir [Khan],”Berto said when asked if he’d like to face Amir Khan next. “I don’t know. We’ll see. It doesn’t matter to me. Whatever makes more sense and brings me that money, let’s make it happen,” Berto said.

There’s not much call for a second Berto vs. Alexander fight by the boxing public. The boxing public would prefer to see Berto fight some of the bigger names like Errol Spence, Manny Pacquiao, Danny Garcia, Shawn Porter, Terence Crawford and Amir Khan. Berto seemed slightly interested in a fight against the 32-year-old Khan as long as the money is there for the fight. However, the odds of a Berto vs. Khan fight taking place in 2018 are virtually impossible. Khan’s promoter Eddie Hearn has him scheduled against fringe contender Samuel Vargas on September 8. After that fight, Khan will either face Kell Brook or Manny Pacquiao. Khan wants to fight Pacquiao, but the money would need to be there for the former eight division world champion Manny to take the fight.

The money fights for Berto would be against the following fighters at welterweight:

– Amir Khan

– Errol Spence Jr.

– Manny Pacquiao

– Shawn Porter

– Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman

– Danny Garcia

– Terence Crawford

– Kell Brook

If Berto is going to take a stay busy fight in his next bout, then his manager will need to be careful with him. If he matches him against one of the young lions with a little bit too much talent, he might end up losing if he’s having an off night. It’s important at this stage for Berto to know what he’s getting himself into, because he didn’t look like he was fully prepared mentally for the physical MMA style of Shawn

Porter in his previous fight before the Alexander match If Berto knew what he was going to be up against in facing Porter, he might have been able to negate some of the stuff that he was doing in the fight.
