Michael McDonald’s debut for Bellator won’t officially be in the bantamweight division the former UFC contender has long called home.

McDonald’s headlining bout against Peter Ligier at Bellator 191 has been altered to a 138-pound catchweight contest, Bellator officials announced Thursday after McDonald weighed in nearly two pounds above the bantamweight limit.

The 26-year-old former UFC bantamweight title challenger ultimately tipped the scales at 137.6 pounds at Bellator 191’s official weigh-ins. His opponent, Ligier, hit the original bantamweight limit, weighing in at 135.8 pounds.

McDonald (17-4) signed with Bellator earlier this year, joining the recent wave of fighters to leave the UFC for other promotions. He racked up a 6-3 record inside the Octagon, earning four ‘Fight Night’ bonuses, challenging for the interim bantamweight title, and only losing to top-ranked foes in Renan Barao, Urijah Faber, and John Lineker.

Elsewhere on the card, fellow former UFC title challenger Valerie Letourneau successfully made weight for her own Bellator debut.

Letourneau tipped the scales at 125.8 pounds ahead of her flyweight contest against Kate Jackson, who weighed in at 125.5 pounds.

Bellator 191 takes place Friday, Dec. 15 at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle, England. The event marks the final Bellator show set to air under the Spike umbrella, as the network prepares re-brand itself as Paramount Network in 2018.
