Canelo Alvarez ‘temporarily suspended’ by Nevada commission

Canelo Alvarez’s May 5 rematch with Gennady Golovkin could be in danger, as the 27-year-old boxer from Mexico has been temporarily suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, with a hearing in front of the commission coming on April 10.

Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KO) failed two drug tests recently, testing positive for clenbuterol. He claims tainted meat led to the failed tests.

From here, it seems unlikely the rematch will actually get canceled. Not to be overly cynical, but you have to consider that this is likely going to be the biggest fight Nevada has on the books in 2018, and it figures to bring a ton of money into Las Vegas on Cinco de Mayo weekend.

That said, stranger things have happened, and if Nevada has clear reason to keep Alvarez sidelined and cancel the fight, it could happen. It would be a huge blow to Alvarez, obviously, and to Gennady Golovkin, for that matter, and of course to the boxing schedule. But we’re in sort of a strange situation with this one — I think it’s obvious everyone involved would probably prefer the fight stay on the schedule, but we don’t know what the commission is thinking or what they’ll bring to the table on April 10, either.
