WBC super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo (30-0, 15 KOs) stopped No.1 WBC contender Erickson Lubin (18-1, 13 KOs) with a 1st round KO on Showtime Championship Boxing at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Charlo connected with a devastating straight right to the jaw in the final seconds of the 1st round that caught the 22-year-old Erickson Lubin flush, just as he was dipping down low.
The power driving punch knocked Lubin down on his side on the canvas, where his arms and legs went into what appeared to be a spasm from the sheer force of the blow. Lubin was eventually able to get up, but the fight was over long before that.
Referee Harvey Dock stopped the fight immediately after Lubin landed on the canvas, as it was clear that he was stunned. The official time of the stoppage was at 2:41 of round one.
Lubin was getting in a little more work than Charlo before he was leveled. Charo was biding his time waiting for the right moment to launch his lightning striking once attack on Lubin.
Jermell Charlo said: “They were giving him a lot of attention. I was quiet the whole time. They said they were going to come take my title. I had to defend it. They didn’t know what I was brining into this and I think (Lubin) was worried about the wrong things. We’re going to unify. The other champions want to fight me and I’ll take any of them”.
