By Sean Jones: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-3-1, 32 KOs) has suddenly packed on a massive amount of muscles since his loss to Saul Canelo Alvarez last year on May 6. In looking at the video of Chavez Jr’s new physique, he’s positively massive in size. I’m not sure what weight class Chavez Jr. plans on fighting in, but he looks way too big to fight at 168.
Chavez Jr. looks like he’s been hanging around Canelo with the way he’s packed on a lot of muscle. Canelo also transformed his physique overnight by adding a massive amount of muscle in one training camp for his fight with Gennady Golovkin.
The Canelo that fought Chavez Jr. and Amir Khan looked like a completely different person to the fighter that fought Golovkin. Canelo really made some shocking muscle gains for the Golovkin fight. You look at Canelo standing next to Golovkin inside the ring after the Chavez Jr. last year in May, and then you compare the Canelo that was inside the ring with GGG last September. It’s like another person. Canelo looked like a bodybuilder, not a fighter, in the Golovkin fight. Now we’re seeing the same look from Chavez Jr. in bulking up with his muscles.
I don’t know what Chavez Jr. is going to do with all those muscles. He’s not going to be able to fight with his physique like that. His arms are so huge that he’s unable to get any speed on his punches. They look like 20-inch bodybuilding arms. Weight lifters workout for years to try and gets biceps like Chavez Jr. I guess Chavez Jr. has good genetics. His father Julio Cesar Chavez never had muscles like that. Chavez Jr. must have got the muscle genetics from his mom’s side of his family.
As big as Chavez Jr. is looking, he might have to fight at cruiserweight. He’s too huge to fight at light heavyweight at 175 in my estimation. Chavez Jr. says he’ll fight either at super middleweight or light heavyweight. I wish the 31-year-old Chavez Jr. a lot of luck trying to make the 168 lb. weight class for his next fight, because he doesn’t look anywhere close to that weight. If Chavez Jr. can have the contract adjusted for weight if he fails to make 168 or 175, then it’s doable.
“Next fight 175 or 168 less wear; better performance,” said Chavez Jr. on social media.
Chavez Jr. looked thin and almost emaciated in the Canelo fight on HBO pay-per-view at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. That fight was held at a 164.5 pound catch-weight, and Chavez Jr. complained afterwards that he was drained from having lost a ton of weight to make the catch-weight for the fight.
