Jorge Linares held up under pressure and took the WBA and Ring titles in Manchester.
In a fight that lived up to its billing as a meeting of two of the best lightweights in boxing today, Jorge Linares outpointed Anthony Crolla on the road in Manchester, winning the WBA title and gaining the Ring Magazine championship, as well.
Scores were 115-114, 115-113, and 117-111. BLH had it 116-112 for Linares, which seemed the most popular score from social media.
Linares (41-3, 27 KO) had never gone a full 12 rounds in his pro career, even as a three-division titleholder, and for a few moments in the middle of the fight, it appeared as though he was going to break down and wear out again, as we notably saw a few years back against Antonio DeMarco.
Linares, though, was able to turn the tide on Crolla (31-5-3, 13 KO) at key moments, keeping the home fighter from taking the momentum for good. Crolla gave a terrific effort in this fight, keeping up the pressure and hanging in with a faster, more skilled fighter, but the end result was that Linares was simply a bit too skilled for him, and Crolla couldn’t find him often enough to get him to fold.
