The World Boxing Council welterweight champion, Errol Spence Jr., was diagnosed with an injury to the retina of his left eye, so he will not be able to face the Filipino Manny Pacquiao on August 21.

Spence discovered the problem Monday in a pre-fight medical exam conducted by the Nevada State Athletic Commission in Las Vegas.

He immediately returned to his home in Dallas, Texas, to undergo surgery to repair the damage this Wednesday.

“I am very disappointed that I cannot fight Manny Pacquiao on August 21st. I was excited for the fight and the event. Unfortunately, the doctors found a tear in my left eye and said that I needed surgery as soon as possible and that there was no way I could fight in that condition.

“I’d like to apologize to everyone. I will be back soon. I’ve come back from worse, much worse, ” Spence said.

Upon learning of the circumstances, Pacquiao sent his good wishes to Spence:
“First of all, I ask everyone to join me in praying for a full recovery for Errol Spence. Thank goodness his physical examination uncovered his eye condition before he suffered further damage in the fight.”

The entire WBC family wishes our champion a speedy and full recovery.
