FORMER Golden Gloves women’s open champion Katherine Roy of the Unites States makes her pro debut as a mixed martial arts fighter against a former Olympian in the curtain raiser of the World Series of Fighting Global Championship on July 30 at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
The 5-foot-4 Roy is facing the dangerous May Ooi of the Brazilian Fight Club MMA from Singapore in the 115 lbs. division.
The 31-year old Roy of Pete Spratt Muay Thai has an amateur record of three wins and one loss while Ooi, a former Olympic swimmer, has a professional record of 2-1.
“She (Ooi) likes to come forward and I’ll like to come forward. So I’d like to scrap it out!” said Roy, who got a small birthday cake from organizer Jason Lilly after the weigh-in.
Ooi, on the other hand, said that she has trained well for this fight.
“I’m excited and even ready to fight right now already,” said 40-year old Ooi.
Ooi has been to the Philippines many times when she was still competing at the pool during in the Southeast Asian Games and Age-Group swimming competitions.
“My first MMA opponent was also a Filipina who became a good friend of mine. In fact she will be at the fight to support me,” said Ooi, who is two-inches taller.
Two other pairs of female fighters are also included in the WSOF-GC 3.
The Female Fight of the Night will have former WIBA International flyweight champion Jujeath “Bad Girl” Nagaowa (2-0) of Highland Boxing Gym from La Trinidad, Benguet against Yuko Kiryu (2-2) from Brave Gym of Tokyo, Japan.
Another undefeated Filipina Jennifer Olsim (2-0) of the Tribal Submission Team Torogi will face NayaraHemily (3-3) of Rio Extreme Fight from Brazil in a swing bout.
“This fight will be featured on the main card if time allows. Otherwise it will be held following the main event,” said co-promoter BricoSantig of Highland Promotions. – LITO DELOS REYES
