FORMER Golden Gloves women’s open champion Katherine Roy of the Unites States makes her pro debut as a mixed martial arts fighter against a former Olympian in the curtain raiser of the World Series of Fighting Global Championship on July 30 at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

The 5-foot-4 Roy is facing the dangerous May Ooi of the Brazilian Fight Club MMA from Singapore in the 115 lbs. division.

“She (Ooi) likes to come forward and I’ll like to come forward. So I’d like to scrap it out!” said Roy, who got a small birthday cake from organizer Jason Lilly after the weigh-in.

Ooi, on the other hand, said that she has trained well for this fight.

“I’m excited and even ready to fight right now already,” said 40-year old Ooi.

Ooi has been to the Philippines many times when she was still competing at the pool during in the Southeast Asian Games and Age-Group swimming competitions.

“My first MMA opponent was also a Filipina who became a good friend of mine. In fact she will be at the fight to support me,” said Ooi, who is two-inches taller.

Two other pairs of female fighters are also included in the WSOF-GC 3.

The Female Fight of the Night will have former WIBA International flyweight champion Jujeath “Bad Girl” Nagaowa (2-0) of Highland Boxing Gym from La Trinidad, Benguet against Yuko Kiryu (2-2) from Brave Gym of Tokyo, Japan.

Another undefeated Filipina Jennifer Olsim (2-0) of the Tribal Submission Team Torogi will face NayaraHemily (3-3) of Rio Extreme Fight from Brazil in a swing bout.

“This fight will be featured on the main card if time allows. Otherwise it will be held following the main event,” said co-promoter BricoSantig of Highland Promotions.  – LITO DELOS REYES
