FORMER World Boxing Federation (WBF) World welterweight champion Dondon “El Supremo” Sultan of the Philippines plans to make a comeback on the ring next month.
“Yes, I’ll be making a comeback with a new manager,” said the 38-year old Sultan, also a former PABA and Philippine welterweight title-holder.
Sultan (18W-23L-3D, 9KOs) lost in his last fight in 2015 against Takaaki Kamikawa by a unanimous decision at the Korakuen Haqll in Japan.
Sultan is currently a trainer of Taiwan’s only active professional boxer Ming Hung Lee (3W-L0, 2 KOs) at the Omega Boxing Gym in Cebu.
Lee is fighting Filipino boxer Michael Estrada tomorrow (Oct. 15) at the Robinson’s Place in Iligan City.
“Nagpaalam na ako kay (GAB) Chairman Abraham Mitra sa plano kong bumalik ulit at pumayag naman siya,” (I already ask permission to GAB Chairman Abraham Mitra of my plan to make a comeback and he approved it) said Sultan.
Sultan, a native of Liloy, Zamboanga del Norte, captured the WBF World welterweight title by a unanimous decision against Eddie Delic on Nov. 25, 2006 in Singapore.
In that same year, Sultan also won the Philippine welterweight crown via a 7th round TKO over Cesar Yarte Dasillo in Cebu and the PABA welterweight crown by a 1st round knockout against Anton Solopov in Surgut, Russia.
Sultan beat Japanese Taisei Marumoto by a 9th round technical knockout in 2015 in Osaka, Japan. Marumoto later became Sultan’s own manager in Japan for one year.
“Gusto ko talagang bumalik upang ipakitang kaya ko pang lumaban,” (I really want to make a comeback to show that I can still fight) said Sultan, who is also the sparring partner of Jason Pagara at the ALA Gym.
Sultan is now managed by Jossel Cayawan-Wild, a Filipina married to a former amateur boxer in London.
“Baka next year ako babalik pero dahan dahan ko muna kukunin ang timbang ko,” (Maybe next year I’ll be back but slowly I will get my weight), said Sultan.
