It wasn’t long ago that Gervonta was constantly blasting Floyd Mayweather and his promotional company on social media over the way his career was being handled. What’s worse is that a lot of complaints over his promotional situation seemed more personal than business.

Even by last September Davis was still venting about Mayweather on Twitter, claiming the retired Hall of Famer tried to get him to dump his longtime trainers so that he could train Davis himself. But now Davis, who is set to face late replacement Hugo Ruiz tomorrow night on Showtime, tells ESPN that that’s all water under the bridge and that he was just frustrated by his inactivity.

Davis, 24, fought only once in 2018, at a time when the young, talented star should have been making a bigger name for himself inside the ring rather than social media circles.

“It was just that I was frustrated because I wasn’t fighting, but I also know that things get hectic around the end of the year. I was getting into trouble, too,” Davis said.

Mayweather Promotions’ Leonard Ellerbe chimed in by saying that a lot of the turmoil between his company and Davis was blown out of proportion, and that while fans and media are often concerned with how often a boxer is in the ring, there are a lot of other things behind the scenes that can affect a fighter’s life.

“We have these conversations — and we had this conversation last night at dinner — it’s a process with this,” Ellerbe said. “And having the patience and understanding and having the trust in your team. He’s not with a team that doesn’t know how to build a megastar. He trusts his team and he knows he’s got to do his part, we’re going to do our part. The sky’s the limit.”

Ellerbe continued by saying that Floyd Mayweather had to endure the same problems that Davis has early in his career, but that when it all comes together Davis will really take off in the sport. Part of that will be keeping Davis in the public eye, for the right reasons, and in 2019 that starts with Davis headlining his first card tomorrow night.
