GGG: I got ideas in how to beat Canelo

By Dan Ambrose: Middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) says he’s got a couple of ideas in how he plans on defeating Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) on September 16. Golovkin apparently has seen enough of Canelo’s fights to have a couple of game plans that he’s going to use when he gets the smaller, weaker Canelo inside the ring at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Golovkin didn’t say what those ideas are, but he was smiling from ear to ear when he revealed them. I don’t think I’ve seen Golovkin look so confident before. The way he was smiling, it was as if Canelo Alvarez is going to be one of his easier fights of his career. You must remember that Golovkin has waiting for this fight against Canelo for the past 2 years. It’s finally come about, and he can’t wait to get him inside the ring.

Canelo and Golovkin met on Thursday for their final press tour stop in Las Angeles, California. The two of them looked out of place when they stood for the face off on stage. Canelo does not look like a true middleweight in standing next to Golovkin. He looks more like a junior middleweight.

Golovkin looks really big next to Canelo. The size difference is going to be a real problem for Canelo, because he’s always been the stockier and more powerful guy. Right now, Golovkin looks stockier than Canelo.

“I got a couple of ideas,” said Golovkin to Fighthub after being asked whether he’s come up with a game plan in how to defeat Canelo. ”I’ll show you.”

Golovkin’s plans for beating Canelo will likely involve in him jabbing to soften him up from the outside, and then firing power shots to the head and body to take him out. Canelo is a counter puncher. Golovkin has obviously fought counter punchers before. He seems to have some ideas what he’s going to do for him to deal with the counter punching style of Canelo. It’s not really fair though, because Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Erislandy Lara already created a blueprint in how to beat Canelo by jabbing him from the outside. That might be boring through if Golovkin just jabs. I don’t think he’s going to play it safe. I think he’s going to go after Canelo and try and knock him out.

“I have more experience in middleweight division,” said Golovkin to Fighthub in talking about the difference between him and Canelo. “Canelo is coming to middleweight division. Much speed,” said Golovkin in talking about Canelo’s hand speed. “He’s a special guy. He has different style. He’s not Jacobs. I feel great. Maybe I look bad, but I feel great,” said Golovkin in response to a question about why he didn’t look good against Kell Brook and Danny Jacobs.

Golovkin wasn’t too bothered when the interviewer pointed out that he didn’t look good in his last 2 fights. Golovkin got the win in both cases. Canelo has been televising the boxing media this week that Jacobs should have won the fight. It makes Canelo seem like he’s got an axe to grind by him not being willing to give Golovkin credit for beating Jacobs, a much better fighter than anyone Canelo has faced lately.

Canelo is coming off of a win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. That wasn’t much of a fight for the boxing public to watch. Chavez Jr. looked drained from having to make the 164 ½ pound catch-weight.
“He talks too much,” said Golovkin after being told that Mayweather has picked Canelo to beat him. “I think he’s not Canelo’s promoter. Ask him why,” said GGG.

Mayweather is the only one that has ever beaten Canelo. If Golovkin does it too, then it won’t be as special that Mayweather beat him. Some boxing fans think Mayweather needs to be the only one that has beaten Canelo. Mayweather’s win becomes less significant once someone else beats Canelo, especially if they beat him by a knockout. Mayweather beat Canelo by playing it safe by jabbing 90 percent of the time and moving. Mayweather played it safe. If Golovkin beats Canelo by a more impressive manner, then Mayweather’s win loses its sparkle.

“One guy elevates every time he fights. Now you got looked at Triple G. How has he elevated?” said Bernard Hopkins to secondsout.com in talking about Golovkin and Canelo. “He hasn’t. He’s flat line. Canelo is going to have to show him boxing, reflexes, and cut him off. Do the things that Andre Ward did to Kovaev. Body,” said Hopkins in suggesting that Canelo will beat Golovkin with his speed, reflexes and body punching.

Canelo isn’t Andre Ward, and Golovkin isn’t Sergey Kovalev. Trying to compare Golovkin with Kovalev is real reach for Hopkins. He’s better off just analyzing the fight and giving his opinion rather than trying to turn Canelo into Ward and Golovkin into Kovalev. It doesn’t make sense at all. I don’t think it’s going to work out well for Canelo if he tries to go to the body against Golovkin. I think that’s a dead end for Canelo. He needs to stick with what he does best in throwing his hooks to the head. Canelo isn’t a big body puncher.

“On September 16th, you will see what the real Mexican style is. There’s a big major difference between the opponents he’s knocked out and myself. Obviously the opponents that are standing right in front ready to get hit, putting their face to get hit. Even a little kid could knock them out. You’ll see September 16th. 1 to 2 points, yes,” said Canelo in saying that he thought Danny Jacobs deserved the win over Golovkin.

Canelo doesn’t move very well. If he’s going to try and elude Golovkin, it’s going to be hard for him to do that. Canelo has short legs, and he’s never been the type that has tried to run around the ring. It would be too easy for Golovkin to cut off the ring on Canelo to force him to fight. Hopefully, Canelo doesn’t stink up the joint on September 16 by trying to run from Golovkin. Canelo needs to stick with his normal fighting style and hope for the best instead of adopting a fighting style that isn’t sustainable. Canelo can’t move around the ring. He can’t fight on the inside because that will put him in range of Golovkin’s shots.

“Not only to beat Golovkin, but to beat all the fighters’ means a lot to my legacy,” said Canelo. “We are prepared for a big task, but we will pass it. He’s a fighter that is strong as well as aggressive that comes forward. He also has experience. He has a lot of amateur fights also. He has a lot of professional fights, but I think I’m better than him. We will see on September 16. They always criticize me, even after beating Golovkin. They always criticize me, but I don’t let it bother me,” said Canelo.
