Golovkin vs Martirosyan, Bellew vs Haye II, more: Boxing fight times and TV schedule for May 4-5

Golovkin-Martirosyan and Bellew-Haye II are the headline fights for the week.

Friday, May 4

ESPN2, 10:30 pm ET, Ryan Garcia vs Jayson Velez, Gary O’Sullivan vs Berlin Abreu. O’Sullivan could’ve fought Gennady Golovkin on May 5, but turned it down. Here he is in the co-feature. Garcia is a top prospect taking on a veteran in Velez who was once a well-regarded prospect himself.

Saturday, May 5

AWE / Sky Box Office (UK), 1:00 pm ET, Tony Bellew vs David Haye II. Bellew and Haye lock horns once again, in a potentially intriguing rematch. I liked the first fight a lot more than some did, but then I like Haye a lot more than some do, so I guess that’s natural. AWE has TV rights in the States, which is nice for the eight people who have that channel. We will have live coverage for the main event. BLH will have live coverage.

HBO, 11:00 pm ET, Gennady Golovkin vs Vanes Martirosyan, Cecilia Braekhus vs Kali Reis. HBO’s first-ever televised women’s fight opens the show, with world P4P No. 1 Braekhus in action against a former titleholder who is nonetheless a huge underdog. Roman Gonzalez was scrapped from this card because he couldn’t get a visa in time. The main event is basically Vanes Martirosyan attempting to shut up “the haters,” or “the analysts,” or whatever you want to call people who think he’s gonna get trucked. I like Vanes, honest I do, but I have low expectations for the competitiveness of this fight. On paper, being honest, it’s probably the least intriguing Cinco De Mayo Saturday main event since De La Hoya-Forbes in 2008, and that one also aired on regular HBO, not PPV. BLH will have live coverage.
