The inaugural World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight final is set for the Olympic Stadium in Moscow, Russia on Saturday, July 21st. Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk (14-0, 11 KOs) and Russia’s Murat Gassiev (26-0-1 NC, 19 KOs) will compete for the Muhammad Ali Trophy, the winner will be crowned undisputed champion and possess all four major titles.
Usyk’s path to the final involved TKOing former champion Marco Huck in the quarterfinals, then edging out WBC champion Mairis Briedis in the semifinals. Both of those wins came in enemy territory, so doing it a third time in as many tournament bouts would be astonishing. Gassiev, who trains alongside Gennady Golovkin, crushed Krzysztof Wlodarczyk via body shot KO in the quarterfinals, then dramatically knocked out Yunier Dorticos in the semifinals with just seconds remaining in a fight he was on his way to winning anyway. These are clearly the best two cruiserweights on the planet, and there’s much anticipation that their respective styles will lead to an instant classic.
