In an interesting boxing program where Gennady Golovkin will go back to the ring, iconic North Korean champion Hyun Mi Choi (17-0-1, 4 KOs) will return for her ninth defense of the World Boxing Association Super Featherweight title. Choi’s opponent will be Colombia’s Calista Silgado (19-11-3, 14 KOs) at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Hollywood, Florida, USA, this Friday, December 18th.

Mi Choi made history on October 11th, 2008 when she debuted as a professional boxer and won the WBA Featherweight title to become the first and only female boxer to achieve such a feat. Her last fight was in June 2019, when she retained her belt by unanimously defeating Japan’s Wakako Fujiwara.

She is known as the “Defector Girl Boxer”, because she defected from North Korea to settle in South Korea with her family. In Mi Choi’s homeland, she had been prepared to be part of a competitive team selected to be part of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but the female incorporation did not happen, and that is how she became professional. So far she has achieved great victories when facing rivals such as Shannon O’Connell, Sandy Tsagouris, or Claudia López.

On the other hand, the native of the city of Tolú, Colombia, comes from two consecutive victories in 2019, both before the limit, and having fought against great champions like Amanda Serrano, Jennifer Han, Cindy Serrano, Mayerlin Rivas, Ogleidis Suárez, and Mikaela Mayer. This experienced fighter is nicknamed “Cali”, with a fighting spirit that can complicate a fight because of her fierce boxing style.

Hollywood will be the big stage for these two women who will measure their talents in the ring with the World Boxing Association Super Featherweight crown at stake.
