Joe Cordina hopes to follow in footsteps of Mayweather, Calzaghe

Joe Cordina is set to face Sean Dodd for the vacant Commonwealth lightweight title on Saturday in Cardiff, and tells Sky Sports that ultimately, his goal is to follow Floyd Mayweather and Joe Calzaghe’s foot steps in his boxing career.

“It’s important to take the right fights at the right time. You could take one step too far and fall short and you’re in the mud, really. You have to be very smart in this game. People like Joe Calzaghe and Floyd Mayweather treated this sport as a business, which is why they retired undefeated. They got multiple world titles and retired comfortably and that’s what I intend on doing.”

Cordina (7-0, 6 KO) has done very well as a professional thus far, coming into the paid ranks in April 2017 and dominating thus far.

Dodd (15-3-1, 3 KO) is a capable fighter at this level, a solid next test for Cordina, but he’s been stopped in all three of his losses, coming against Andy Townend, Scotty Cardle, and Tommy Coyle. The Coyle bout was his most recent, on April 21.
