This will be very interesting 12 months for 21 year old Jon Fernandez, who`s looking forward to a bright future in Spain, but also wants to take strides towards glory in the US.

This boxer from Echévarri, a town on the outskirts of Bilbao, is gaining the attention of boxing worldwide. On February 10, he made his second US combat, televised live on Showtime. The television network got in touch with the fighter in order to have his  11th match  as pro in ‘The new generation’ card .

It`s to boost the careers of international  and national prospects .  With a perfect record of 10 victories with 8 KO’s and no defeats, Jon faced Ernesto Garza III, a rocky and aggressive American boxer who was crowned champion of the prestigious amateur tournament Golden Gloves in 2008. Garza, so far had a record of 7 wins with a loss. He was very confident before the fight: “I’m going to win by KO, he has not faced someone like me.”

Jon prepared for the match along with one of the best boxers of the moment, Carl Frampton, who requested his help, in the run up to his rematch bout with Leo Santa Cruz. Jon  is a tall super-featherweight (1.80 m) with striking characteristics similar to those of Santa Cruz and Frampton is a boxer of a stature similar to Garza.

The help turned out to be mutual, instrumental and useful.  Frampton’s own coach was surprised to see Jon`s  skills.

At the time of the match, Jon was relaxed on his US TV debut. After the corresponding presentations of both fighters, began the combat scheduled to 8 rounds.

The plan of Garza was evident. He was going to press  Jon to be able to get inside its guard. The Spanish fighter contolled the distance, and at the 40 seconds mark, a tremendous right hook  buckled Garza’s legs, sending  him to the canvass.

The American got up quickly and  survived the round.   In the third Echovarri wobbled his rival with a powerful uppercut that sent him against to he ropes. Jon  stood in front of Garza to release all his arsenal and the referee stopped it.  On June 9, he-ll will be back on an American card, this time in Canastota.
