Joshua vs Takam results: Katie Taylor wins world title, Kal Yafai retains

Katie Taylor, Khalid Yafai, Dillian Whyte and Frank Buglioni scored wins on Saturday.

Katie Taylor won her first professional world title today in Cardiff, while Khalid Yafai retained his WBA super flyweight belt on the Joshua-Takam undercard at Principality Stadium.

Taylor (7-0, 4 KO) claimed the WBA lightweight title with a 10-round decision win over Anahi Esther Sanchez of Argentina, who came in this week with the title, but lost it on the scales on Friday.

Ireland’s Taylor, who is a major sports star and one of the names helping to bring more publicity to women’s professional boxing, won on scores of 99-90 across the board. Sanchez (17-3, 9 KO) was down in the second round on a body shot.

Yafai (23-0, 14 KO) held onto his 115-pound title with a win over Japan’s Sho Ishida (24-1, 13 KO). It was another fight that went the distance, with Yafai winning on scores of 116-112, 116-112, and 118-110.

Yafai has said that he’d still like to fight Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, who has lost two straight to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, but remains one of the bigger names in the division.

Dillian Whyte claimed the WBC “silver” heavyweight title with a decision win over Robert Helenius. Whyte (22-1, 16 KO) won on scores of 118-110, 119-109, and 119-109. He may be in line for a crack at the full WBC champion, Deontay Wilder, which could then set up a fight with the winner taking on Anthony Joshua in 2018. Helenius falls to 25-2 (16 KO).

Frank Buglioni also won a decision, retaining his British light heavyweight title by beating previously-undefeated Craig Richards. Buglioni (21-2-1, 15 KO) got scores of 116-113, 117-111, and 117-111 in his favor. Richards is now 10-1 (4 KO).
