Before the June 1st Fox Sports 1 tripleheader that most people will be too busy watching Anthony Joshua vs. Andy Ruiz Jr. to notice, a pair of Filipino ex-champions who lost their titles on the scales will return to action on FS2 when Jhack Tepora and Marlon Tapales hit San Jacinto.
Tepora (22-0, 17 KO) knocked out Edivaldo Ortega last July to claim the interim WBA featherweight crown and ultimately set up a title defense against veteran Hugo Ruiz on the Pacquiao-Broner undercard. “El Capitan” wound up obliterating the scale at 131.5 pounds, missing both the featherweight and super featherweight limits. He won a get-well fight in February and now faces Jose Luis Gallegos (16-6, 12 KO), last seen dropping but ultimately losing to Erick de Leon in March.
This fight will take place at 126 pounds despite Tepora’s foul-up.
Tapales (32-2, 15 KO) came in two pounds over for his inaugural WBO bantamweight title defense against Shohei Omori, ultimately stopping his Japanese foe in 11 but leaving without the belt. He’s fought just twice in the last two years, picking up a pair of knockouts to extend his current finish streak to six. His opponent, Roberto Castaneda (23-11-2, 16 KO), owns losses to a remarkable number of notable fighters, including Felipe Orucuta, Gary Russell Jr., Jessie Magdaleno, JoJo Diaz, and Jonathan Guzman.
Devon Alexander vs. Ivan Redkach headlines the main card, preceded by Hugo Centeno Jr. vs. Willie Monroe Jr. and Nigerian heavyweight prospect Onoriode Ehwarieme against Rodney Hernandez.
