Kell Brook will have his hands full on May 27 when he takes on unbeaten American Errol Spence in Sheffield, England, but the IBF welterweight titleholder is still looking ahead.
In September, Brook, who is rated No. 2 by THE RING at 147 pounds, made the audacious choice to jump two divisions in a bid to dethrone unified middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin. He was stopped in five rounds and sustained a broken orbital bone.
Surely, after sustaining that kind of punishment, the Englishman would have no interest in going near Golovkin for a second time?
“Absolutely I would (take the Golovkin rematch),” said Brook in an interview with Sky Sports in the U.K. “I would love to get back in there with him.
“I would probably like to fight the weight above welterweight and maybe two fights, and then fight him. Instead of the big step up in class and higher weight division.
“But I would love one day to get back in there with ‘GGG’ and have another tear up with him.”
Brook (36-1, 25 knockouts) is likely to come under harsh criticism for these remarks but his attitude is refreshing. The alternative to avoiding the biggest risks is not taking any.
Golovkin meets Canelo Alvarez in a middleweight superfight on September 16.
